Malahide 5 Portarlington 9
Malahide continued their
Leinster League campaign with a home fixture against a Portarlington side who
were just two points behind Malahide in the league table. Persistent drizzle
started just before kick off and very soon conditions were difficult with the
slippy ball difficult to control. The visitors started the better dominating
the early possession statistics. Malahide’s defence held firm albeit with a few
nervy moments and last ditch tackles. However on 10 minutes the early pressure
told as Portarlington converted a penalty chance to take a 3-0 lead. On the
restart Malahide started to come into the game with some good line breaks from
Sean Power and Mick Fitzmaurice. Read the rest of this entry »

Kilkenny 10
Malahide 17
Malahide continued their journey into Leinster League Division 2A with an away fixture in Kilkenny. Coming off the back of two fine victories everyone involved knew this would be the team’s toughest challenge to date. And so it proved to be with a huge Kilkenny pack dominating early exchanges. Malahide to their credit held firm defensively with some huge hits from Eamonn Gleeson, Austin Kennedy and Eoin Crowley keeping the home side at bay. While Kilkenny dominated early possession the visitors fired a few warning shots of their own just failing on a couple of occasions to get outside the Kilkenny defence. Read the rest of this entry »

Division 2A
West Offaly Lions 0
Malahide 45
Malahide
continued life in Division 2A on Sunday with their first away trip of the
campaign to Ferbane to face West Offaly Lions. The overnight rain saw the
visitors greeted with the sort of heavy pitch which does not suit any style of
running rugby. However Malahide got the sort of start which always eases the
pressure a little in these games. After an exchange of early territorial kicks
Malahide decided to counter with ball in hand, flanker Sean Power joined the
line and his pass put wing Dave Murphy away. He made light of the heavy under
foot conditions and sprinted clear of the visitors defence to touch down under
the posts. 10 minutes in and Malahide ran the ball from lineout possession Rory
O’Driscoll joined the line to create the extra man and his pass again set
Murphy free who repeated his earlier feat and moved the visitors into a 14
point lead. Malahide continued to enjoy the better of the game but the slippy
handling conditions were making it difficult to retain possession. Using the
boot was always an option and from one such downfield kick centre Brian
Geraghty put in a big hit on his opposite number and Outhalf Mat Barnes pounced
on the loose ball and was able to just evade the despairing tackles from the
home defence to score his sides third try. Rory O’Driscoll was again successful
with the conversion. As West Offaly tried to fight their way back into the game
the errors started to creep in, from one such error on 25 minutes Brian Geraghty
pounced on a loose ball and his quick pass again found Dave Murphy in space.
The wing completed his first half hat-trick as he left a trail of West Offaly
defenders in his wake to score the away side’s bonus point try. Malahide
continued to enjoy the better of the game but some poor handling saw the
remainder of the first half remain scoreless. Malahide
made a number of changes at the break and it took their new personnel a little
time to get into their stride. Eventually on 65 minutes a decent break from
Brian Geraghty saw a maul develop on the West Offaly line. Malahide were able
to slowly force their way over and replacement prop Wayne Hilder had the simple
task of touching down for the try. Malahide made up for their slow start to the
second half when straight from the kick off they moved the ball wide and a
great break from fullback Colin Corkery enabled him to set Eoin Barber free.
Barber showed great pace to score in the corner. Replacement scrumhalf Brendan
Carpenter added the extras with a great kick from the sideline to move Malahide
to the 40 point mark. Malahide continued to press and when Corkery made a break
down the shortside Brian Geraghty was in support to cross for Malahide’s
seventh try. Malahide played the remainder of the game comfortably controlling
things but never really adding that edge to further push the score along. The
only blow to the away side being the loss of influential No 8 Keith Harrell to
injury. For the second week in a row the Malahide performance was underpinned
with some strong set piece work. Ciaran Brophy, Anthony Colbert, Eamonn Gleeson
and Austin Kennedy all performed well in the tight while Eoin Crowley for the
40 minutes he was on the pitch put in some great tackles. Malahide know this
division will get much tougher than the two games they have already had and
will expect that change to be evident next Sunday when they take on a Kilkenny
side away who are just a point behind in second place in the table.
Malahide 40
Millmount 0
Conditions were not exactly suited for an open running game
of rugby, 20 hours of torrential rain forced a change of pitches to the Seabury
pitch, what did not change was Malahide’s focus on setting a marker for the
coming Season.
The game began with Malahide forcing Millmount into errors
with solid tackling and constant pressure. The work at the breakdown was
excellent and it was not long until Malahide forced a turnover, after a few
phases the ball was spread to the backs where the pace and numbers created a
good score in t the corner. As the day wore on Millmount we getting no change out of
midfield and the Malahide pack moved quickly to turnover ball whenever
possible. It horrible conditions Malahide did the basics right and soon opened
up more and more space in the Millmount defence. Running in 6 tries in such
poor conditions and 5 conversions certainly put down the marker Malahide were
hoping for. With good interplay between backs and forwards, the training and
work put in by this team certainly showed on Saturday.
Next stop is Railway Union who also recorded a good victory.
It is important for this Malahide team to keep the momentum going, a good
performance this weekend is a must, it will all start with training as always this Thursday.
Training for the women is now on Mondays as well as
Wednesdays @ 7.30.
The U 17′s lost to Skerries 47- 5 in a pre season friendly, so
after last weeks comfortable win, this has shown us we have a lot of work to
do. But the players and coaches will learn more from this game than the last.Well done to Mikey Tyrell getting over the line for our try.
Plan for the week coming:
Wednesday training, old club 19:25. Sunday for now training
Seabury 10:15.
No match for the U15′s this week, but we had a training session
on Sunday at Seabury.
19 bodies attended and a session concentrating on fitness and passing
skills was conducted. Split into backs and forwards to work on
specifics.
Training again on Wednesday, venue still to be confirmed.
U14
The U14′s lost in Ballycorus yesterday in a very tight and physical game
to Lansdowne 12-5. Despite losing this was a good result due to a number of
players missing. It puts the squad in good shape for the league starting on
16th Oct.
Training will be Wednesday at 6:30pm in Broomfield (old club) and next
Sunday at 10:30am.
Leinster
League Division 2A
Malahide 38 – Clane 10
Malahide opened their Leinster League campaign on Sunday with a tough
home fixture against a Clane side who finished fifth in the Division last year.
After an early shower had passed through conditions were pretty much ideal for
a good open game of rugby. Clane seemed to settle first and had the better of
the opening exchanges but the early part of the definitely saw both defences on
top. Malahide started to work their way into the game and eventually managed to
gain some controlled possession in the visitors territory and when Clane were
caught offside Fullback Rory O’Driscoll stepped up to give the home side the
lead. Clane fought back immediately and when Malahide were penalised for a
breakdown infringement in front of the posts the scores were levelled. As the
game started to open up a little the home side definitely held the upper hand
but a number of soft turnovers never allowed them to keep the pressure required
to earn the game’s opening try. However two further penalties from O’Driscoll
did push the home side into a 9-3 lead. As the half drew to a close Malahide
attacked once more with Scrumhalf Neal O’Keeffe breaking from the base of the
ruck, as the ball was moved through the hands Centre Mick Fitzmaurice found the
space to force his way over and after O’Driscoll’s conversion Malahide now held
a 16-3 lead. Clane responded immediately and spent the remainder of the half
pressing the Malahide line but the host’s defence held firm and they managed to
maintain their lead until halftime.
Malahide made a dream start to the second half when almost straight from
the kick off flanker Eoin Crowley came into the line to create the extra man
and his pass put Rory O’Driscoll away to
score the try of the match. Clane to their credit had not given up and they
responded quickly when Malahide lost control of their own scrum five metres
out. The Clane back row were quick to respond as they forced their way over.
The conversion brought the score to 21-10 and it was game on again. However
with the help of a strengthening breeze at their backs Malahide were able to
keep the game in the Clane half. The pressure told on the 60 minute mark when
hooker Anthony Colbert touched down after a well controlled maul from a lineout.
Shortly after No 8 Keith Harrell pounced on a loose ball over the Clane line to
secure the bonus point for the home team. With the score now at 33-10 Malahide
continued to play some good rugby with centres Mick Fitzmaurice and Richie
Forbes combining for Forbes to touch down for the games final score. While the
home team scored some great tries it was the defensive work of the likes of
skipper Eamonn Gleeson, Niall Crookes and Wayne Hilder in the first half which
really laid the platform for the win. Next up for Malahide is a trip to Ferbane
next Sunday to face West Offaly Lions.
The seasson started with a hard fought Spencer Cup game against Railway Union. Final score 29 to 27 to the fisrts. Here’s the link to flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrfc_photos/sets/72157627589664414/
