There was Leinster Metropolitan area trials this monday morning in Wanderers RFC for all clubs within the metropolitan area. With over 70 boys on trial Malahide had 5 boys selected born in 1997; Glen Carey, Darragh Sweeney, Ronan Breen, Cian McGrory and Lee Byrne. Unfortunately Cian was unable to take part due to injury but he will have an opportunity at the next screening session to ensure he doesn’t miss out.
The boys were screened during a session that lasted an hour and a half . They were put through their paces on handling/passing ,decision making ,continuity in contact ,tackle ,position specific and game sense. All 4 boys represented Malahide RFC extremely well and we will know in a few weeks if they make it through to the training squad of around 30 players which will eventually be the Metro team for next season.
So let us all wish the boys our support in representing their club at the next level.

Leinster League Division 2A

Malahide            55

West Offaly Lions 3

Malahide played their last league game of the year at home to West Offaly on Saturday. After a number of weeks slogging it out in traditional Irish winter weather conditions on Saturday were surprisingly good. The firm underfoot surface allowed both sides to play with a bit of pace and it was Malahide who started to gain the upper hand. Free flowing rugby saw the home team run in four tries in the opening twenty minutes to move into a 24-0 lead. Malahide’s next score was the try of the day with Richie Forbes running onto a Rory O’Driscoll chip after the backline had combined to put the full back into space. West Offaly did come back into things and after one penalty attempt was unsuccessful, they did finally manage to get themselves on the scoreboard with a 35 metre effort. However Malahide continued to dominate and it was only some great last ditch defending from the visitors that kept Malahide at bay.

With such a comfortable margin Malahide were able to ring the changes at half time and the fresh legs just seemed to add to the Westmeath men’s difficulties. Malahide continued to play good open rugby with the fresh legs of Brian Geraghty and David Kiernan certainly making a difference while Eoin Barber was a constant threat to the visitors on the left wing. Malahide crossed for further tries from Richie Forbes, Dave Murphy, Geraghty and Kiernan. The victory leaves Malahide in fourth place in the table just a point behind third place Kilkenny who they welcome to Estuary Road in the first weekend of the New Year. Malahide won’t have many easier days than this in the Leinster League but they will still be pleased by the manner in which they scored their tries with backs and forwards combining to play with pace and accuracy.
